Engine in! Engine in!

61 double cab project
Today I installed the hoopty-mouse-infested engine. It seems to run well, just looks like crap. New muffler, carb, plugs, wires, distributor, oil cooler, and generator.

Here's why it's a good idea to look a little deeper into a motor of unknown prvenance... This one was completely clogged up with mouse detritus. It runs well, and has good compression, but I would have ruined it trying to drive it.

01/26/03 julies presume you had a few SQEAKS from the motor then???
01/24/03 Thom I'd put the new distributor on just to see if it would fire. It did, so I put a muffler on (the old one was long gone) and then pulled the shroud off to check for crap inside, which I was sure would be in there.
01/21/03 Ray OK Thom, this one I'm not getting. There is a new exhaust and .009 on an engine that would obviously overheat in 2 minutes.

01/02/03 Rick And another thing. Where I come from we used to cut Kdf cars into baja bugs! Get over it, they are just junky little german cars that are expendable. Now if you were talking like a 64 Nova, or a 70 Impala, thats a way different story, then lets hear you complain about a real car. Don't get me wrong, VW's are fun, but just not valuable enough not to have fun with.
01/01/03 Rick Apparently you didn't fully understand what I was trying to say. Your sarcasm is not appreciated. If you feel you want to concours restore a VW, then by all means do so. There is room for all tastes. I can appreciate a custom as well as a full on restoration. I'm certainly not going to be able to end a debate over what is considered correct in a group of people's minds. If you think making modifications is destructive to your personal property then don't do it. VW's are cheap and easy to work on that is there mass appeal.
12/31/02   I agree with Rick, VW's are so cheap, and there are so many around that they dont deem collector status. VWs are for cutting on, hell what other car lends itself so much to that?
12/30/02 Rick I know there are those who consider this sacreligious to molest what Hanover produced; However I for one really like it. Maybe this will give me the incentive to do this to my dc.If you want to see a perfectly correct bus go to a museum. VW's are for driving and for fun, good luck.

12/27/02 Thom Actually, you just need a normal cargo door section; there's nothing magical about the "euro" or RHD-style door; they end up being suicide doors because of that fact.
12/27/02 john walker ok, good idea, i need a euro double cab left rear door section to make mine a 4 door. next, i'll graft in a sunroof. bitchin! hack, hack, hack. individuality rules! none of that boring same-o same-o crap that EVERYONE else does. hell, i think a 911 engine and trans is next. sky's the limit! just keep it tasteful.

NorCal's only walk-thru double cab sees the light of day for the first time. I hope to get a bunch of the welding done today.

01/07/03 Eric THE " VW " HAS BEEN THE PALETTE OF SELF EXPRESSION FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, AND ALTHOUGH "I" SCRATCH MY HEAD AT SOME AND WISH "I" COULD BE THE ORIGINAL CREATOR OF OTHERS "I" ADMIRE YOUR TALENT AND WOULD ENTERTAIN THE SAME CHOICE.COODOE'S 2 U
12/28/02 thayervw I think its brilliant. I'm excited to see the end result. good luck with YOUR bus.

Thayer
12/28/02 dave I have to say that you are quite ambitious with your bus work. Those who have a problem with hacking are identifying too much with original factory. They slave with that one way to as close to perfection as their efforts can get them and hate others work, fearing that they will have to "fix" what someone did to their newly acquired project bus. One of the interests with splitties is that a person with average skills really can do the work on it relatively inexpensively. Suddenly we have access to this as an art form as I see it. Go ahead and experiment and learn. Do as good as you can. Enjoy the work while you can.
12/28/02 Mike When I say "hack" I do not mean shoddy work, I mean un-original, i.e; changing from factory.
12/28/02 Neale As a matter of interest, Thom, why are you trying to justify yourself to a troll? Nice job on the walk through, people just have to face up to the fact that, a) you can do what you want with your own bus/truck, and b) some busses/trucks are just too far gone/changed for "original" to be viable. My 2c, anyway.
12/28/02 Thom We can debate "correct" until the cows come home; the second the original seat was removed from the car, it became incorrect. I'm using original parts in a config that's technically possible, just never offered (that we know of).
There was 'no such thing' as a RHD DD barndoor until Andrew Ogden dug one out of France, oui?
I have a lot of hours in the un-lowering, in things such as sourcing all of the correct parts and fixing the 'adjustments' that were made to accomodate the lowering.
This bus festered on TheSamba from July to November, because nobody else apparently had the cojones/skills/interest to take it home and fix it, in whatever manner they felt appropriate.
John: I shoulda rebuilt my over-revved 2.7L and installed it in this! A 356 engine would be cool also, but alas, I have a local shop building me a bread-and-butter 1600 SP, with new case, heads, P/C's etc.
12/27/02 john walker it's hard to be a hack if you have the talent to do something nicely.
12/27/02 Mike Funny thing is that Thom complained about how the truck was lowered, and it had the wall cut. Those Honda seats were just as incorrect in the crewcab as walk through units. And the wall would be harder to fix than raising the truck back to stock height. Any plans to make this the first double door double cab?
12/27/02 Tom Mink No kidding! I'd consider a cutout bulkhead and a hunk of particle board with Honda seats mounted to it a "hack". I'd call this a save.
12/27/02 geilguy How is this a hack if it the PO had already cut out the bulkhead? Thom seems very originality oriented...
12/27/02 Herr von Dingleberry It may be a hack but it looks like a damn good job. I have a non walk-through 13 window deluxe that I am restoring that has a huge hole cut out where the spare tire should mount. This gives me an idea... I would love to see step by step pics of this one.
12/27/02   But if it catches on, it won't be different anymore! It will become as trite and overdone as tattoos and lowered buses...
12/27/02   Uh John? What do you mean catch on? You mean people hacking buses?
12/26/02 john walker good to see something different. maybe it'll catch on. i have the only one in seattle, so far.

Picked up a set of new Firestones @ Bob's tire in Carmichael - $210 for 5, mounted, balanced, out the door. Mounted them on some 'correct' bus mis-matched (various date codes, 3 are crows's foot) bus wheels I blasted and painted earlier in the week. Looks like I might have to raise the rear 1 notch.
