Here's another cooling system for single cabs in dusty climates. Unlike the Aus system of scooping air above the windscreens and ducting it under the load bed to the engine compartment, this sytem features "ear" scoops each side of the cab, with similar ducting under the load bed to the engine. Note how two cab rear panels have been used back-to-back to make a hollow duct for the cooling air. I have only seen this system on two pick-ups, both assembled in South Africa and both 1967 models. I don't know when single cabs were first assembled in SA, but earlier models were imported fully built up.

08/15/02 Chris Julian thank-you for continueing to post and continueing to defend yourself espeically with all the negative creiticism you have been receiving. I think it is great that you saved your bus from being scrapped or crushed. I also like how you are keeping the general look of your bus stock by using factory colors and not doing any custom mods like lowering.
08/15/02 Julian Dalton Roof was grafted on out of neccessity. (believe me i could have done without the expense) I am trying to preserve a bus. Colours are original.(SR & BGR) I have not slammed it. Have kept 6V Elecs on the origanl 60000m engine. She had been standing for 26years!!
08/15/02 Jacob Interesting comment. Why would a part be less desirable to an owner of a bus, that has some modification?
08/15/02 Dan Why can't a custom have a vintage theme? Just wondering.
Anyone that puts wide whitewalls on their stock bus has surely made a custom if it didn't come from the factory with them.
08/15/02 Mike This is one thing that really puzzles me. Why do people who graft roofs, lower there buses, paint there buses non stock colors? Strive to find rare and desirable parts and accessories? Wouldn't your custom bus benfit from some vitaloni mirrors?

Drove about 1000 miles in the past 2 weeks up and down Northern California's Hwy 1 and 101. Where are all the splits? I only saw one and it was beat. Saw about 50 hard-working, overloaded bays though. Also stumbled onto a few interesting pieces of machinery. Shown in the photo is a 1987 BMW powered, 100mph, 30mpg, Under 6ft tall, Split window, Vixen TD21 and a cute little 2001 13ft Scamp trailer (950ish lbs.). It has a nice retro-roundish puck-like look and from the back it looks a lot like a bus.

11/07/02 james I have number 131 and it drives like a dream, at 75mph it delivers 22mpg.,
09/24/02 brian I was there in January. I slept just North of Santa Cruz. I hadn't seen a splitty the whole trip. I drove about a mile and saw another camping on the side of the road. I posted a pic in Stand by you van.
