VintageBus.com Image Gallery - Bus Clones

Pix of bus-like vehicles. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and man of VW's period competitors tried to emulate their sucess with the transporter. Even Chrysler is a modern day hanger-on, claiming to have invented the minivan (VW 1949), and claiming to have invented the double-door (VW 1953).

08/20/05 Lynn Thompson We have a 85 SanFu with a 600 CC propane powered that still runs...has less than 6000 actual miles
on it. It needs a starter...Ha! impossible to find, but it will run. Have thought about selling it but we know how very rare this van is!
One must admit that these vans were way before their time and kind of got "hushed" out by someone (wink)
09/13/03 pat houchin anyone know where a Sanfu Bic for sale is?
05/17/02 rick I have one as well, mine was propane until recent conversion.

1935 Stout Scarab "The First Minivan" William B. Stout (1880-1956) is remembered in aviation for his part in the design of the famous Ford Tri-Motor "Tin Goose" and in automotive circles for the Scarab, nine of which were built. His credo "Simplicate. Add lightness" was reflected in the Scarab design by eliminating running boards (allowing a wider body interior), placing the engine in the rear and incorporating a smooth airflow body, based on unit construction (no frame as such). Specifications: engine water-cooled V-8; bore 3-1/16 in., stroke 3-3/4 in., displacement 221 cu. in., modified to 100 hp. Suggested price new beginning at $5,000. Part of the collection of the Owls Head Transportation Museum, where I work. www.ohtm.org

The Box is said to be the first mini van. I have heard from numerous sources including Curtis Brubaker that Lee Iacoca (sp?) had the Brubaker poster (I'm still looking for one) on his office wall for years prior to the Chrysler Caravan. I heard a story last weekend at the Carlisle show from a personal friend of Todd Gerstenberger (Brubaker's associate). It seems that VW was offered an opportunity to produce the Box. They turned it down because of the Bus. It seems that if the Box and the Bus were side by side, people would pass the bus up to see the Box and that apparently scared the crap out of VW. Now just some anecdotes for you. I was driving through one of our larger towns near here (30K) and a woman with an arm load of groceries walked into a phone pole while looking at the car. I stopped to see if everything was alright and soon had a crowd that took me an hour to get away from. So much for doing the right thing. Another story is from this time last year. I was driving to PA for the Carlisle show. There was an explored that had been shadowing me for about ten miles. You know the one, out front, to the left, to the right, behind. As we approached a construction zone I looked over to see him looking at me with a cheshire cat like grin. Bang, bang, bang he hit those rubber barrels and I never saw him again. Well I hope there's something here for you. I've always said that it has to be DIFFERENT to get my garage space. I keep telling my wife that Detroit never built anything that couldn't sit out in the rain.

05/18/06 Curtis Brubaker VW turned down the Brubaker Box deal because the company were about to introduce "The Thing" an open topped off-roader produced in Mexico, which eventually failed in the U.S. ...that and concerns over product liability shoud they produce it.

Front end shot of an Alpha Romeo bus that was parked adjacent to a 1954 barndoor on the pier at Wallenius Lines, Port Hueneme, California July, 1998. This ship just unloaded from Europe. Check the barndoor on the trailer in left side of photo... (See 'Barndoor' category for rear end shots of both buses)

The pier at Port Hueneme, California while picking up my 1954 VW barndoor ambo-camper "Barnambulator". Check out the cool Alpha "Romeo" (sic) bus that was parked behind it. Interesting that Deluxe-like indentations were in the roofline. Time constraints prevented capturing more photos. See 'Other' category for front end shot of the Romeo. Yup, it's spelled correctly!

Documentation of a Mercedes 319-D bus about 1996. Could have had the bus plus a non "Deluxe" twin parked beside it for $200.00. Passed on the deal for personal reasons Material, Energy, Space & Time. Traded the find to a fellow VW bus fananatic for the price of a vintage license plate frame. He ended getting the buses for a VERY good price! =)
