    61 Double Cab
Yesterday a semi was delivering trusses to a house down the street and around the corner from me; when he turned the corner, the back end of the load caught the rearmost hoop on my double cab, and pulled both hoops forward, which bent them up pretty good, and dented the tailgate.

Tonight I installed an NOS Hella roof beacon (so I guess it's not NOS anymore?) I plan to mount a second wiper switch to run the light.

The narrowed rear end project of the double cab took a bit more time than I thought... oh well. Sure, the flames added a few more weeks!

the new shop truck/daily driver. just got it running and driving last friday. 87 3.2 w/webers, welded in a 73 911 rear torsion tube in place of the bus tube, then the 915 trans and rear suspension bolts right up. SC front brakes, 76 19mm m/cyl, rack and pinion steering, narrowed adjustable front beam. goes like stink. the engine lid is out getting some louvres punched in.

07/08/03 john walker pic 7 shows the boxed rear frame area. just boxed it from the shocks back. the tank remains in the stock location, which is in a closed area in a doublecab, and not out in the open behind the engine like a normal bus. the nose of the trans needed some clearance into the lower rear of that closed area, so notch 6" wide by about 2' deep was cut, and then sheetmetal was bent and welded in to close the hole. this job took about a month of weekends, but i run a shop and had all the tools. i didn't take pics of the rack and pinion, but next time it's on the rack i will post some.
    07/08/03 John Skyrude Hi John
This was really interesting.. Do you have som photos of the rack and pinion installation ?
    07/06/03 benmiguras hi
after seeing your 911 bus it has spurred me to ask some questions
did you have to reinforce the whole chassis before you put the engine in? also did you remove the fuel tank to put the engine which i think is much longer inside?
me and my father have been thinking of increasing the engine capacity of our camper (which is on this website if you search under lowered) what advice would you give in reinforcing the chassis without replacing everything?
    please reply
