Here's the asphalt-based mastic insulation. This stuff is softer than the PVC-based stuff, so it doesn't have the same abrasion resistance. One sheet did the rear quarter area, another for the doors, so you should budget 4 sheets to do the rear area of a bus, not including the roof. I only got one side done tonight, but it really made a noticable difference! I'd originally ordered the Hi-Temp mastic, but they were out of stock and didn't know when they'd get more, so I took this stuff instead. The Hi-Temp is actually cheaper and has twice the damping capabilty (.08 vs .04). Oh well, such is life. McMaster-Carr part # 9709T21

Here are two (BIG) pictures of mine '64 Panelvan.The first shows how I bought it, and the second shows how he is looking now. All the welding is done and the sanding almost, I hope I can take it on holiday to France this summer with new paint (L345) and new 5 spoke Empi and an roofrack.The bus used to be an firebus in Austria, but is now my funcar in Holland.

Sound dampening material Sound dampening material

Today I installed some sound dampening material I bought through McMaster-Carr. I installed some a PVC-based "viscoelastic" sound dampening material with an adhesive backing. I cut it into strips to mimic the original sound dampening material found in some buses. I chose to use this material because since it will be exposed, and should be able to withstand contact during loading and unloading. It did quiet the bus down noticeably, although not dramatically. However, it knocked down a lot of the "booming" while driving at high speed (ie 65MPH)

I also have some asphalt-based mastic sheets on order, which I'll use on the side panels.
