Add Comments 1969 Westfalia Trailer in need of TLC graham collin
I bought this Westfalia Trailer from a neighbour because it seemed unique. He had used it during his career and towed it behind a sand coloured VOLVO. I think it was made in 1969. It has some vw splitty parts in it's DNA. I intend to restore it to pull behind a splitty firetruck...
Has anyone seen anything like it anwhere else?
Originaly it was bought to carry machine tools to exhibitions and has AC power connectors and fluoresent lights inside. If I can't get it restored I will sell it to a VW fan for ongoing use

9/03 Redid the main ceiling birch panelling for Shawn's 61 flipseat westy. The replacement roof bracing was not made quite right, and trimming that white oak in situ was a real bear. It is supposed to be flush with the metal bracing on the roof, you can see how it sticks down farther, which woul make the ceiling panels lay funny, and meet the cab roof panels with a gap.

Add Comments '59 Westfalia Seat Backrests Robert Davis
Here are the new seat backrests I made drying after the first coat of Varathane. Getting the proper thickness of the wood required laminating two pieces together, as the originals are 5/16" thick, or the metric equivilent of that. Modern day 1/4" is less than 1/4", so I laminated 1/4" (really 3/16") with 1/8". Then cut to size, corners rounded and edges slightly routered so as to not wear down the wool over time due to it being stretched over a sharp edge.

Add Comments '59 Westfalia Seat Backrests Robert Davis
This is an upclose shot of the "keyhole" opening that I had to cut to match the original seat backrests. Each backrest has two of these keyholes, along with two rivit holes, as a backing plate with the same opening is rivited to the backside of the backrests. The backrest is then hung on a frame with two carriage bolts that slip into these keyhole openings, allowing for the backrests to be removed as they become the center section of the bed.

This picture could speak 1000 words if it could talk. First the search for *correct* fabric. All we could come up with was white and black plaid wool. The squares were only slightly smaller, but I needed yellow. A several step self taught dying process and much trial-and-error finally resulted in a close enough color match to suit me.
